The Geismar Plant is located on the border
of Ascension and Iberville Parishes. The main products produced
at the facility are liquid fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorous.
Industrial grade Nitric Acid and Phosphoric Acid, which are used
by other local industries as a raw material are also produced at
the site. The main raw materials used are natural gas, phosphate
rock, and molten sulfur.
The
plant started operation in 1967 under Allied Chemical. In 1984,
a group of investors bought the liquid fertilizer business from
Allied and the company was renamed Arcadian Corporation. In 1997,
Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, Inc. purchased Arcadian Corporation
and Geismar became part of PCS Nitrogen Fertilizer, L.P. Throughout
the years the plants have been upgraded to enhance safety, environmental,
and energy performance with state-of-the-art computer control systems.
In 1999, construction of a modern and efficient nitric acid plant
with excellent environmental performance was completed. As a result
an old acid plant has been permanently shut down.
The
plant has operated 23 years without a loss-time injury. PCS and
contract employees have embraced and are driving the Behavior
Based Safety Process.

been reduced by 85 percent since 1987 and we are continuing to evaluate
reduction opportunities by exploring technology which is new to
our industry.
In
addition to supporting the community with its payroll and tax base,
PCS Nitrogen employees are active participants in the community
in which we live and work. We support the United Way, March of Dimes,
4-H, Toys for Tots, and numerous education programs. One educational
activity is the Cooperation Office Education (COE) program where
high school students are interviewed and hired into temporary positions.
Some of these students have been hired into permanent positions.
Other educational activities supported by PCS Nitrogen include tutoring,
Career Day, judging science fairs, Earth Day presentations, safety
