Raising
Radishes with Amazing Ammonia
A Project Overview
- The
Louisiana Ammonia Producers (LAP) have been donating fertilizer
school kits to River Parish schools since 1997. The
companies sponsoring the Raising Radishes with Amazing
Ammonia school kits include CF Industries, IMC Phosphates,
PCS Nitrogen and Triad Nitrogen.
- LAP
has worked with the Louisiana Resource Center for Educators
(LRCE) since the inception of the program, and in 1997 partnered
with the Department of Education to enhance the merits of
the program and help improve students math and science
skills.
- Between
1998 and 2002, LAP will have donated about 1,750 school
kits to teachers and reached about 40,000 second grade students
across South Louisiana.
- The
Raising Radishes with Amazing Ammonia lesson
plan was originally developed in 1997 by Latrenda Knighten,
a science specialist in East Baton Rouge Parish. Since then,
Roxson Welch, a LRCE science consultant, has modified the
lesson plan to highlight LEAP skills. She has also played
an integral role in training teachers to use the kits.
- The
ammonia awareness school kit program has received professional
recognition by the Southern Public Relations Federation
and the International Association of Business Communicators
for its creativity and effectiveness.
Comments from teachers and education leaders include:
The kit is wonderful, said Michele Duhe, a teacher
at Lutcher Elementary School in St. James Parish. It
correlates with the curriculum guide and workbook and can
even be used with math and social studies.
The
radish kits effectively facilitated the teaching of key
science concepts using meaningful and fun methods,
said Rosalyn Dutton, Director of Elementary Schools in Ascension
Parish. You (the Louisiana Ammonia Producers) are
a valuable education partner.
